QuranMeaning in our own words

I did not create jinn and humankind except to worship Me.

He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.

Did you think that We created you without purpose, and that you would not be returned to Us?

Those who remember Allah standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You; protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Notes on interpretation

Scholarly interpretation

Worship (ʿibādah) in 51:56 is understood by scholars broadly: not only ritual prayer, but any act done for Allah within what He permits, including work, study and caring for family.
