QuranMeaning in our own words

Fighting has been prescribed for you though you dislike it. Perhaps you dislike something and it is good for you, and perhaps you love something and it is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.

The verse is about fighting. Scholars draw from its final sentence a general principle about accepting what Allah decrees.

Do not lose heart and do not grieve; you will have the upper hand if you are believers.

Revealed about the Muslims' defeat at the battle of Uhud.

If a wound has touched you, a similar wound has touched the other side. These are days We alternate among people, so that Allah may make evident those who believe and take martyrs from among you. Allah does not love the wrongdoers.

A person will have only what they strive for.

Hadith

Do your best, then let go of “if only”.

The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both. Strive for what benefits you, seek Allah's help, and do not give up. If something befalls you, do not say “If only I had done…”, but say “Allah decreed, and what He willed He did,” for “if only” opens the door to Shaytan's work.
