Patience

Patience in the Quran is not passive waiting. It is holding steady: continuing to do what is right, not giving up on Allah, and not letting hardship harden into bitterness.

QuranMeaning in our own words

O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Allah is with those who are patient.

Patience is paired with prayer. You are not meant to carry the weight alone.

We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives and crops. Give good news to the patient: those who, when disaster strikes them, say, “We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return.”

Tests are expected. They are not a sign that you have been abandoned.

Say: O My servants who believe, be mindful of your Lord. Those who do good in this world will have good, and Allah's earth is spacious. The patient will be given their reward without measure.

So surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with hardship comes ease.

The promise is repeated, and the ease is described as coming with the hardship, not only after it.

Hadith

For a believer, both gratitude and patience are good.

How wonderful is the affair of the believer: all of it is good. If something good happens to him he is grateful, and that is good for him; if harm befalls him he is patient, and that is good for him. This is for no one except the believer.

Patience is hardest, and most valuable, in the first moment.

The Prophet peace be upon him passed a woman weeping at a grave and told her to be patient. He later said that true patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.

  • What are you being patient with right now?

  • Where has a past hardship already turned into ease?
